Garang Akau is one of the estimated 27,000 Lost Boys of Sudan who were forced to flee from their families and villages during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1987 - 2005) where over 2 million people were killed. The story of the "lost boys" is a miraculous one. These "lost" boys, and girls as well, evaded starvation, thirst, wild animals, and disease as they walked for months, and some for years across the country to refugee camps in Ethiopia and then, on to Kenya.
After completing high school and junior college, he went on to complete a bachelor's degree at Stanford and an MPA at National University. He is currently the co-founder and director of New Scholars, Inc. which is a social venture supporting and incubating youth-led small and medium-sized enterprises in Africa (Currently focused on Southern Sudan and Kenya).
