Opening ceremony of the World Assembly of Youth 15th General Assembly

The World Assembly of Youth 15th General Assembly event is hosted once every four years by the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) which brings together young people and youth leaders from around the world to discuss pertinent youth issues and is used to determine channels of policy and responsibility for the direction and administration of WAY.

Today’s events have left an unforgettable mark with the WAY Secretariat as it marks the return to Melaka, the home of WAY, for this event . Officially opened by the Minister of Human Resource of Malaysia, the
Honourable Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam in the presence of the President of the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) and Chief Minister of Melaka, the Rt Honourable Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Bin Mohd Rustam and the Malaysian Youth Council President, Mr Mohamed Maliki Mohamed Rapiee, it was witnessed by delegates and observers from all around the world.

With the selected theme Youth Rise for Peace, prolific speakers from regional and international organizations around the world graced the auspicious event. Among those speaking were guests from the Namibia, USA, Congo, Turkey, India and Malaysia. The afternoon was taken up with the first General Assembly Session where the agenda was adopted and the credential commission was formed. Twelev messages were received from Heads of State congratulating WAY. The Assembly also received reports from the Executive Committee members and the Acting Secretary General.

During the opening address by the Minister of Human Resource, the Honourable Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam quoted that “Peace starts in the home with each individual and spreads through neighborhoods, cities and ultimately countries”.

With four days remaining and a special focus on peace the event will include national reports, global expert presentations, as well as an opportunity for WAY to develop the millennium action plan and chart the way forward for their future peace programmes.

The World Assembly of Youth (WAY) is the international coordinating body of national youth councils and organisations. The full members of WAY are national youth councils. WAY has 120 member organisations from all continents. Founded in 1949, WAY has consultative with various agencies in the United Nations system, including ECOSOC, DPI, UNFPA, UNAIDS, UNEP, UNESCO, WHO and UNCTAD. It acts as a bridge between the youth and the UN.

WAY recognises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the basis of its action and services. WAY works for the promotion of youth and youth organizations in programme areas such as: democracy, environment, human rights, population, health, drugs, community development and leadership training.
