This article was originally written for the Umbruch brochure “Pride, Guilt, Shame and Humiliation.
Emotions in the context of current conflicts” with input from the Umbruch Seminar with the same title
that took place in Istanbul in June 2008.
This article by Marthe Hesselmans aims to explain the role of emotions that peacebuilders encounter in their work and identifies ways to transform their destructive effects into constructive ones. It explores how we can recognise feelings that linger underneath the surface, like shame and humiliation, what effect they have on tensions between groups, and how to deal with them. By merging theory and practice, the article seeks to provide trainers and youth with tools to help connect people and break the vicious cycles of emotions and conflict.
